Saturday Night

We haven't uploaded pics yet (we just got back and are super tired) so I'll keep tonight's update on the shorter side.

We fed him three times today (we don't go in for the 2am feed). The 8am feed didn't quite go well...he took 30ml's from me and then a new therapist came in and wanted to look at him and try to feed him and he just ended up really mad and refused to take anything from her. At 2pm, Chris fed him and he did good (47 ml's) and then tonight at 8pm Chris fed him again and he was just so tired. He only took 32.

Tomorrow I will find his doctor and see when we will talk about moving him to 8 bottles a day. I think it's just hard on a baby when they have such a strict schedule. When my mom took my brother home (he was a preemie) the doctor told her that he would eat when he was hungry - which he did and was totally healthy. So we shall see.

Thank you so much for continuing to pray for our family and the many other families that are still in the NICU. For those who were praying specifically for "Baby B" I wanted to let you know that he is doing well on ECMO and they were able to turn some of his ECMO settings down. That's such great news and his parents were so happy! Thank you again for your prayers!

My daughter was a preemie in the nicu too. I was so frustrated at the end trying to get her to feed the 'required' amount. If she didn't get tube fed what she didn't finish, then I think she would have eaten better later. Thankfully she ripped out her feeding tube and they let her try bottles for a couple of days. She did really well. I hope the reflux issues are cleared up and baby Brayden is able to go home soon. You are not alone. God Bless you all.

It drives me crazy that they "require" these tiny babies to eat a certain amount of food. No two babies have the exact same intake. Maybe the issue it forcing him to eat and he just doesnt want to be forced. I never ever had my babies on a set schedule. They ate when they were hungry. God Bless you all!

My daughter was in the NICU at ACH 4 years ago. Now she is a happy, healthy little girl. We were only there for nine days, but I know a little about what you are going through. It is hard to see our babies in those beds hooked up to all the tubes and wires. I am praying for you, Brayden and all the other babies in the NICU.

I'm sure you're exhausted by the troubles with feeding and dealing with the regimen they want Brayden to be on. It definitely increases the tension you feel if he isn't able to take what they want him to, and he may sense that tension. He's a very little guy, getting used to so many things, and eating is a hard thing to regulate at first, especially with the added challenge of reflux. I hope everyone can relax a little more tomorrow and things will go more smoothly. I know it will get worked out, and my prayers will be for that to happen very soon. Thanks for the update on Baby B. That's very good news!

I'm still praying for you guys and the other babies there. Thanks so much for continuing to update us and letting us share in your journey. You are a wonderful inspiration and I know your handsome Brayden will be heading home soon!

A baby will eat when he or she is ready not when the dr's or nurses want them too, whether the baby is a preemie or not.

Continuing to pray!

So relate. The feeding was the one thing that kept us in the NICU. As soon as I got to feed Zane on demand and as much or as little as he wanted, he was happy! I did not have to take him in for weight checks. Praying for you. Can't wait to hear you are heading home.

I just wanted you to know we've been following along and added your badge to my blog weeks ago. Glad to hear Brayden is doing so well. Years from now, this time will have seemed to pass so quickly...hang in there.

My youngest was a preemie and the Drs. had that 'requirement' of food volume, how many times he ate, etc. I finally had had it and got into it with the nurse and Dr. I am not telling you to do this. I did it nicely and asked them if they ate when they still felt full. Bingo! The light went on and he got to go home a few days later eating on his terms and not ours. Plus, when you thicken an infant's bottle to honey texture it fills them quicker and takes longer to digest. I am praying.

They had Harper on a strict schedule and she hated it. She just basically refused to eat so they ended up putting most of it through her nose. Ever since we got home - she can't get enough food. We changed to letting her just eat when she wants it. I always thought I would stick to a schedule but this works so much better.
I know Brayden is going to eat good soon!!! We are praying for him to come HOME!

The docs will let him go "on demand" once Brayden proves that he will eat enough on his own, and it sounds like he's getting there. Once he "figures it out" it's almost like a switch is thrown and you won't be able to slow him down. That'll be a great day! I can't wait to hear when he gets there!

To Anonymous #1: A NICU baby is so much different from a "normal" baby. Numbers at feedings really do matter as they affect dehydration, electrolytes, bilirubin/jaundice, kidney function, stooling, IV rates, and more. Your children must have been really blessed to not have to have any special care.

I hope you can get these feedings figured out and tweaked so that he's happy. I agree that he will eat when he's ready and wants to..seems the set schedule might be alittle stressful on a little baby like that.

Keeping you in my prayers!

I see there a lot of moms on here that can relate to what you're going through with getting him to eat the "required" amount. And although I cannot relate as they can, I know it must be frustrating when he doesn't do it like they want. Each child is different and I bet if you got him home and let him be him... as far as eating, lol... he will be just fine. He's MAD at them trying to force it in him, lol. God is in control and he will go when it's time.

You know, I so remember those days. I would go home in tears at night because she still wasn't eating enough to come home. Then the therapists told me all kinds of horror stories about what would happen if we rushed her. One day I was sitting there with her and just broke down in tears because I wanted her home. Our favorite nurse said, "I'm going to get an order to get that feeding tube out today if it's the last thing I do here." I don't know how she did it, but she did. Never again did we have issues with a feed and we were home within the next 4 days. We would have been home sooner than that but hit a snag with sleep apnea the day before she was to get discharged. Praying for you!

Still praying for your family. Brayden is looking so totally adorable. Hope you are feeling better. Noticed no mask the last couple of days so hope that means you are feeling better. Just wanted you to know we are still praying and keeping an eye on your blog in hopes of more news of improvement.

I am praying for Brayden. I know how hard it was to have a baby in the NICU...my triplets were there for two months. Hoping your precious son comes home soon.

I hope things are better today and am anxiously awaiting your update. Don't be discouraged, Just remember how far Brayden has come and how well he is doing now. I know you are eager to take him home, but you also want to be sure he will not have any future problems. May God grant you patience and peace.
